Drone FAQs

Drone Frequently Asked Questions

we hope these drone FAQs answer your questions
  • Are you qualified for commercial drone work?Yes. To operate legally, Skysight UAV pilots have completed and passed written and practical flight tests approved by the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) granting them a PfCO (Permission for Commercial Operations). We also hold an A2 Certificate, allowing us to fly specific drones close to uninvolved people and in Congested/Residential areas.
  • Are you Insured to operate?Yes. To operate legally, Skysight UAV have a 'Certificate of Liability Insurance' with Moonrock Drone Insurance underwritten by Hiscox Limited EC 785/2004 which includes Public Liability and equipment insurance. We can adjust our Public Liability insurance to suit your company 'on-site' policies. We carry a copy of our insurance documentation for you to review.
  • What area do you cover? We are based in Swansea, South Wales but can cover most locations within the UK. (Travel charges may apply).
  • Are there restrictions on where you can fly?Yes there are certain restrictions on specific areas of airspace we are unable to fly, however when we gather the relevant location information from you, we can quickly asses this and request the relevant permissions if applicable. In most cases we do not fly within set distances of individuals or property not under our control , however with our new A2 Certificate we can now fly specific drones very close to individuals and property. We can request additional permissions in certain circumstances if required.
  • What are the benefits of a drone? There are many advantages to using a UAV / Drone over traditional methods. Drones minimise the high cost and time required to erect scaffolding, ladders, access towers, aerial lifts, and other heavy equipment. Drones enable easy and safe inspections of tall and complex structures and other assets, especially the inspection of Roofs, general Building Surveys, Telecommunication Sites and Wind Farms. Drones can be deployed relatively quickly. They can work in hazardous areas, reducing the risk to life. Drones can get close to assets to record high detail images which can be quickly delivered making it easier for professionals in any industry to easily interpret and share relevant data.
  • Can you fly in any weather conditions? No. High winds or rain can delay a flight, this is usually a safety precaution which is set out in our CAA Operations Manual. If we have to postpone a booking due to inclement weather, we will work with you to rearrange a suitable alternative date.
  • How far away can you fly?We can generally fly the drone up to 1640.42 feet (500 metres) from the Remote Pilot, maintaining visual line of sight.
  • How high can you fly?We can fly to a maximum altitude of 400 feet (121.92 metres)
  • Can I see the footage live?Yes. We encourage you to review our live High Definition (HD) downlink to our receiver. This is usually helpful if a Surveyor is looking for something specific on a building or during an asset inspection. This is also useful for the insurance industry.
  • Do you edit the images / video? We provide in-house video editing services at competitive rates, or we can supply unedited footage to you. Our aerial photography images are optimised and supplied to you edited unless you request otherwise. In addition, we provide custom music / audio soundtracks and voiceover recording services to complement your production. This can be arranged as part of your complete package.
  • What formats do you deliver to the client?Depending on the work commissioned, formats range from the following: (.jpg, .tif, .mp4, mov, .kml, .obj, .dxf, .pdf, .html, .laz, .xyz) and others.
  • Can you fly a drone in an indoor space?Yes. We can fly indoors if it's within our safety regulations and providing it's a large enough space to do so. We would assess this during a site visit to establish a flight plan.
  • How much does it cost? There are many factors that can affect the cost depending on the type of work you require. Each request is assessed based on the complexity and time it will take to complete. Costs start at £195.00 for 12 processed still images, using our Mavic drone. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.
  • Do you charge a deposit? For jobs over £500 we charge a 20% deposit (£100.00) which is paid at the booking stage.
  • What happens if we have to cancel the booking? If the client cancels the booking within 7 days of the scheduled date the 25% deposit will not be refunded.
  • Who owns the copyright?SKYSIGHT UAV retains the copyright of all aerial photography and videography content. Copyright can be purchased on all aspects of media for a specific project. (To be negotiated)
  • How do I find out the Google coordinates for my proposed flight location? There is a link to Google Maps - 'Get the coordinates of a place' section on our 'The Process' page. Click here to go to our page.
  • Can you repeat the exact flight?Yes. We can arrange to fly the same route using a pre-programmed flight plan. To be able to perform a repeat of a previous flight, we would need to know this is your intention when we plan the first flight. Our aircraft is capable of autonomous flight on a pre-programmed flight path provided the Remote Pilot is at the controls.
  • Can you fly at night?Yes, we do have permission from the CAA to fly at night.
  • What PPE do you have?We will check with you prior to a site visit what your specific PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) requirements are.
